Waxwing is a haunting tale of love and loss, freedom and captivity, and womanhood. The song tells of a world filled with captive birds in cages, and beings petrified in an enchanted forest. Originally conceived by Georgia as a 12 part choral piece, the work slowly metamorphosed into its new form; first as a live arrangement for a previous incarnation of the band, and finally captured as a recording for the first time in its current lush orchestration.
lyrics
Waxwing
--------
Once, under juniper
a wicked word
from bones and broderie
became a bird.
She cut her feathers up
into a cloak
and fled back to her almond tree
when he awoke.
Fair Jorinde it be Hallowtide!
Oh Fitcher’s feathered head
wherefrom, wherefrom?
Find the petal with the pearl inside -
black eyed Susan’s out of bed
and up in song.
Seven ravens stalk the inbetween,
the fairytale foretold.
September sent the rain
in silver darts.
Send them soupy for the guillotine,
how many heads have rolled?
To see our livers slain
and eat out our hearts.
(Birdy be wary
Birdy be wary
Birdy be wary
Birdy be wary
Would you like to bake a pie?)
Fairings for the four and twenty,
don’t you brood, little birdy.
Would you like to bake a pie?
(Please be wary
Please by wary
Don’t look on the shelf
The woman tells a lie)
If you need a lesson
I have plenty -
kick the jinx
and kiss him goodbye.
Jorinde I’ll carry you up and into the sky...
Oh God, make me small make me somebody else.
(We’ll make it out brave, we’ll make it out whole)
I flew through the forest and wept where you knelt.
(You watered the grave, you met with my soul)
You ran with the flames and you taught them to dance.
(Come back to bed, come back to us)
Now they would burn if you gave them a chance.
We can turn back today, turn back to dust
Sang the ring dove from the willow spray
“My pretty nightingale
where have you gone?”
“Sir the forest took our words away,
and that is how this sorry tale became a song"

Loris and the Lion weave gentle tales of joy and loss; a patchwork of sonic delights built by (wo)man and machine to soothe
the soul and feed the heart.
A duo from Liverpool, navigating life together accompanied by: fairytales; folktales; lifetales.
Calling to mind the sounds and spirit of Joanna Newsom, Tori Amos and Jesca Hoop....more
I do not normally cry because of music, or fiction in general. Chords made me cry. Every time I listen to it, it still feels like a warm, tight goodbye hug.
But it isn't what convinced me to buy this album, because damn, I knew I would right from the start of Secret Worlds, and knew it ever more at every song. The way the songs here can combine to tell a whole new story, and even reference others from The Horror and the Wild, is just magnificent. Mayana
I discovered this band mere weeks ago through pure chance; someone recommended Fair in a discussion about wholesome songs. And it was; love at first listen. YouTube recommended me Battle Cries next, so I gave that a listen too, and the the energy and the overlapping lyrics made me fall in love anew.
I bought this album and Ruin less than a day later. Everything TAD have made is true art, different from everything else I've heard. Mayana
