about

Low explores narratives of femininity, set within the fairytale trope of the transfiguration of adolescent girls into songbirds.

lyrics

Low
------

Forest of Eves -
all library leaf, and paper cut,
the night above, the moon beneath.
See a little birdie flying low -
find a breeze, flow, flex your feathers!
Did you ever see a bigger sky?

She sings “la, la, la”

wherever she flies, though she tries to fly away.

Down in the grove,
all freckled light, and eggshell rain,
the summer warm and thick with cherries:
be-comely woman, headed home
to find a comb before she finds her father.

“Oh, did you ever feel so flooded
as when lying low with me?

Take me down in Leman fields”,
wherever they go, they will know the way she’s walked -
those lilies stain like tailor’s chalk.

All flowering elflock.

I used to draw men like you,
shaped their shoulders through the night.
But I could never get the fingers right -
they used to clutch too tightly
than to befit my softly shepherd.

They told you “always wield your will, your grace.
”
To us, to take it lying low,
they set us in our place:
“Ladies, most of you will be mothers…
you will love, and you will bleed
its honeyed wine, its flaxen seed.
Spitting teeth on swallowed stones,
all flowing milk and bruisy bones.”
Baby, you were born to bear it.

Lo,
Little Birds,
beating down on brittle branches.
Did you ever see a bigger sky?
